Man sentenced for beating MTA worker, 75, in Bronx subway station
THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) --- A Bronx man is heading to prison for breaking a 75-year-old MTA worker's nose and jaw during an attack in a subway station two years ago, authorities said.
Anthony Williams, 31, was sentenced to five years in prison Friday for assaulting Baboo Singh, 75, on his way to work in September 2023, according to prosecutors. Williams pleaded guilty to second-degree assault two months ago.
The defendant punched Singh, who was dressed in his uniform, in the right eye while he was standing on the southbound platform in the Nereid Avenue subway station at around 9:15 a.m. on Sept. 12, 2023, according to court records.
Williams then repeatedly punched the MTA worker in the head and body after the punch knocked him to the ground, authorities said. Singh suffered a fractured jaw and nose.
“Without provocation, the defendant punched and kicked a
75-year-old MTA employee who was in uniform on his way to work. We will not stand for assaults on transit workers, the backbone of our subway system," Bronx DA Darcel D. Clark said.
In January 2023, Williams punched a correction officer while he was incarcerated at Rikers Island, prosecutors said. He pleaded guilty to attempted assault in that case and was sentenced to one and a half to three years in prison.
Williams' attorney could not be reached Friday.
