Red Wolves erupt to earn run-rule win over Cajuns, 13-3
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Jake Henry Williams began a seven-run eruption in the third inning with a two-run single which broke a 3-3 contest and Arkansas State scored 10 unanswered runs to defeat the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, 13-3, in a seven-inning Sun Belt Conference game on Friday at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field at Russo Park.
The regular-season finale between the teams will start with a 2:20 p.m., first pitch. Louisiana’s senior class – Andrew Herrmann, Conor Higgs, Matthew Holzhammer, Dylan Theut and Jose Torres – will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Arkansas State (26-26, 14-15 SBC) scored in the second inning on Kaden Amundson’s three-run homer before Louisiana (25-29, 15-14 SBC) scored twice in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI triple by Connor Cuff and bloop single by Mark Collins.
The Red Wolves loaded the bases in the third on singles by Cross Jumper and Patrick Engskov off Louisiana reliever Blake McGehee (3-5) before Cason Campbell drew a walk. Williams then lined a single through the left side for a 5-3 lead before the Red Wolves scored on a throwing error, a two-run double by Ashton Quiller and sacrifice fly by Wil French.
Cooper Garrison (3-2) earned the win with 5.0 innings of scoreless relief for Arkansas State. Jumper led the Red Wolves’ 11-hit attack going 3-for-5 with Daedrick Cail and Quiller recording two each.
Louisiana, which fell into a three-way tie with Old Dominion and Marshall heading into Saturday’s regular-season finale, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Maddox Mandino reached on an error, stole second and scored from third after Kasen Bellard was thrown out at second on an attempted steal.
Collins went 2-for-3 to lead the Ragin’ Cajuns with Caleb Stelly extending his hitting streak to eight games with a third-inning double.
