Igloo Coolers Announces Massive Recall Amid Potential 'Amputation'
A popular cooler brand announced a massive recall amid the potential for "amputation."
Igloo is expanding its recall of 90-quart rolling coolers "due to fingertip amputation and crushing hazards," the notice on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says. It announced that the total number of recalled Igloo coolers is now nearly 1.2 million.
The product is described as "Igloo 90 Qt. Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers."
"The tow handle can pinch consumers’ fingertips against the cooler, posing fingertip amputation and crushing hazards," the notice adds. The recall was expanded on May 8, 2025.
"About 130,000 additional coolers (In addition, about 20,000 in Canada and 5,900 in Mexico) (More than one million Igloo coolers were previously recalled in February 2025)," the notice adds.
Since that February notice, Igloo has received "78 more reports of fingertip injuries, including 26 resulting in fingertip amputations, bone fractures or lacerations," USA Today reported.
Igloo posted a safety alert on its website when the recall was initially announced in February.
"Be aware of pinch points which may occur on or around handles, latches, hinges, lids, and other moving components of the cooler. Avoid placing hands and fingers where injury or damage can occur," the company's website says.
"Injuries could occur if the handles, latches, hinges, lid, and other moving components on coolers are not used properly. Use safe practices on latches, handles, hinges when using them," it adds. "Be aware that loose clothing and jewelry may also be caught in pivot areas of your cooler. Children should be supervised if present when using a cooler. Operate and maintain your cooler so it can be enjoyed for years to come! Thank you for purchasing an IGLOO cooler! Stay safe!"
The initial recall notice says, "This recall involves Igloo 90 Qt. Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers manufactured prior to January 2024. The date of manufacture is imprinted on the bottom of the cooler in a circular pattern with an arrow pointing to the month of manufacture and the last two digits of the year of manufacture inside the circle."
It adds, "The recalled coolers have a tow handle. 'IGLOO' is printed on the side of the coolers. The coolers were sold in multiple body and lid color combinations, some of which are pictured above. The following cooler models with tow handles are included in the recall. The model number is located on labels affixed to the bottom of the cooler."
