US Defense Secretary: Houthi Threat not fully eliminated, Ceasefire shifts focus to Iran and China
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that while Houthi operations weren’t fully successful, the ceasefire allowed focus on Iran and China.
U.S. Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, acknowledged that the U.S. military’s operations against Houthi forces did not completely eliminate them but allowed for a ceasefire. The ceasefire provided the U.S. military the opportunity to focus on its core interests, particularly in dealing with issues related to Iran and China.
In a recent interview with Fox News on April 29, Pete Hegseth explained that President Biden had set a limited objective for the mission—to inflict enough damage on the Houthis to ensure the safety of U.S. vessels in the Bab el-Mandeb and the Red Sea. However, Hegseth noted that the ultimate goal of fully neutralizing the Houthis remained unattained.
Following the resumption of Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the southern Yemeni waterways in 2023, the U.S. military escalated its operations against the Iranian-backed rebel group. These intensified operations resulted in the death of hundreds of Houthi fighters, including many of their commanders.
Despite the ceasefire between the U.S. and the Houthis, Hegseth acknowledged the call by certain groups for the complete eradication of the Houthi forces. However, he emphasized that, in an ideal world, such a goal would require significant time, resources, and focus, which would divert attention from other critical global issues.
He emphasized that the U.S. must prioritize other national security concerns, especially regarding Iran and China. He warned that if the U.S. poured all its resources into regime change in Yemen, it would lose sight of its broader strategic objectives.
The ongoing conflict with the Houthis remains complex, with the U.S. balancing its military objectives in Yemen while focusing on larger global challenges. The ceasefire has provided the U.S. military some breathing room, but the ultimate resolution of the Houthi threat and the broader regional stability remains uncertain.
