UN: Afghanistan unprepared for return of refugees
The UN has warned that Afghanistan is unprepared to accommodate returning migrants, citing ongoing crises and a shortage of aid.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has expressed grave concern over Afghanistan’s worsening humanitarian situation, highlighting the country’s inability to accommodate the growing number of returning migrants. The UN agency reports that over 3 million Afghan refugees have returned from neighboring countries, including Pakistan and Iran, in recent years, exacerbating the strain on Afghanistan’s already limited resources.
Compounding the crisis is a significant decline in international aid. The UNHCR has noted a “worrying” reduction in global support, with only 25% of the $216 million needed for this year’s humanitarian efforts secured so far. This shortfall threatens the agency’s capacity to provide essential services to vulnerable populations.
The UNHCR is urgently requesting $71 million to assist returning refugees, emphasizing the necessity for continued political and financial backing from the international community. The agency warns that without sustained support, the situation could deteriorate further, leading to increased displacement and hardship for Afghanistan citizens.
In light of these challenges, the UNHCR has called on neighboring countries to treat Afghan returnees with dignity and to facilitate safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriations. The agency stresses the importance of ensuring that returnees are not subjected to further hardship or persecution upon their return.
The humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan is further exacerbated by ongoing conflict, economic instability, and natural disasters. The UN reports that nearly half of Afghanistan’s population requires humanitarian assistance, with food insecurity and malnutrition rates remaining alarmingly high. These conditions underscore the urgent need for increased international aid and support for the Afghanistan people.
The situation in Afghanistan remains dire, with millions of citizens facing severe hardships due to a combination of factors, including conflict, economic instability, and natural disasters. The international community’s response has been insufficient, and without immediate and substantial support, the humanitarian crisis is likely to worsen.
It is imperative that global actors prioritize humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, ensuring that aid reaches those most in need and that returnees are treated with dignity and respect. Only through coordinated and sustained efforts can the international community help alleviate the suffering of the people and support the country’s path toward stability and recovery.
