Professional Boxer Dies of Cancer at Age 25
British boxer Georgia O'Connor passed away this week following a battle with cancer. She was 25.
O'Connor, who won a gold medal at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games and took home silver at the Youth World Championships that same year, had revealed back in January that she had been diagnosed with cancer. The Durham, England native previously disclosed last year that she was suffering from ulcerative colitis.
BOXXER, O'Connor's promotion company, confirmed her death with a social media post and statement Thursday.
"We are heartbroken by the passing of Georgia O’Connor. A true warrior inside and outside the ring, the boxing community has lost a talented, courageous and determined young woman far too soon," the statement reads.
"Georgia was loved, respected and admired by her friends here at BOXXER. Our thoughts are with her loved ones at this difficult time ❤️????️."
O'Connor was 3-0 as a professional light-middleweight fighter after turning pro in 2021.
Despite her health issues, she was able to marry her partner Adriano Cardinali earlier this month and had legally changed her last name to his.
"09.05.2025.The day I married the love of my life," O'Connor posted on Instagram on May 12, along with a photo of herself and her husband crossing hands and showing off their rings.
News of O'Connor's death sparked widespread tributes from around the boxing world, including from the official England Boxing organization.
“Georgia inspired many with her achievements in the ring and her spirit outside of it,” England Boxing said in a statement. “Her dedication, passion, and talent made her a role model for young athletes across the country. Georgia’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those she inspired, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with O'Connor's family and friends during this difficult time.
