‘Great Honour, Big responsibility’: Shubman Gill’s first statement after being given India’s Test captaincy
Indian team’s newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill has stated that leading the team in the red-ball format is going to be a great honour and a big responsibility for him.
In a short video clip shared by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Shubman Gill stated, “As a young kid, when anyone starts playing cricket, they want to play for India. Not just play for India, but play Test cricket for India for a very long time. To be able to get this opportunity is a great honour and like you said, it’s a big responsibility.”
Shubman Gill has played as an opening batter for India in Test format and also played at No. 3. Now he is going to lead the Indian team as Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from red-ball cricket.
On appointing Shubman Gill as the captain, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said, “We discussed every option in the last one year, we have seen Shubman many times. Got a lot of feedback from the dressing room. Very young, but improving. We hope he is a great player. He is a fantastic player, we wish him all the best. You don’t pick a captain for one or two tours. We have seen some progress with him over the last year or two. There is no doubt that this will be as difficult as it can be.”
Gill’s previous leadership experiences with the Indian team include being the white-ball vice-captain of the team that won the 4-1 T20 series win in Zimbabwe last year and the 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai. In 32 Test matches, Gill has scored 1893 runs at an average of 35.1, which includes five centuries and seven half-centuries to his name.
25-year-old Shubman Gill is currently leading Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. His GT teammates and members of the coaching staff have praised Gill’s composure, calm and tactical skills.
