'True Detective' Creator Hints at Potential Return of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson
Over the span of several years beginning in 2014, HBO has released four seasons of True Detective, all of which have been met with a pretty strong mixed reaction except for, of course, Season 1.
Starring Matthew McConaughey as Detective Rust Cohle and Woody Harrelson as Detective Marty Hart, show creator Nic Pizzolatto—who also served as the show's sole writer—found some incredible chemistry with the duo and their polar opposite characters in Season 1 that was probably going to be tough to duplicate going forward.
However, for the legion of fans who cherished the often comical dialogue between Marty and Rust, there might be more to come according to Pizzolatto himself, who recently appeared on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast.

"I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that — who knows? — maybe we’ll do it one day," Pizzolatto said. "It's character-based again. But it's not something I've written or anything. It's just, I had that in my head. And we've [McConaughey and Harrelson] talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to it. It's just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”
While Pizzolatto so far just has a story idea floating in his head, there are two major takeaways here that lean toward the positive.
First, he mentions that he's already talked with McConaughey and Harrelson about the prospect of another story for the iconic characters.
And secondly, since the two actors are such close friends, it probably wouldn't take too much convincing to get both of them back onboard as long as one of them was 100% sold on the idea.
McConaughey's strong affection for True Detective also doesn't hurt the chances of a possible second act.
"Yeah, there's a lot about it [True Detective] that I appreciated," McConaughey said, "My favorite season — and I feel like I can say this objectively — is Season 1 ... I watched it weekly, like everyone else, on Sunday night, and that was an event for me. And I got to sit back and enjoy that. I loved the water cooler talk on Monday morning. Even though I made it, I sort of forgot what was going to happen next. It was one of the great events in TV."
The wave of excitement from fans, much of which can be found in this endless @DiscussingFilm thread on X, can probably be best summed up by this video with the caption of "True Detective fans rn."

It's worth noting that a fifth season of True Detective is already in the works and slated for a 2027 release, with New York serving as the backdrop.
