Plumtree-born author Sithandazile Maphosa, known by her pen name Thina Maseko, has released her latest book titled Hard Work and Determination, a story that highlights perseverance in the face of adversity.
Now based in South Africa, Maphosa draws from her own life and those around her to craft stories that speak to resilience, hope, and strength.
Born in Nyamambi Village under kraal head Livit Ncube, Maphosa’s literary journey has seen her publish titles like Bekunzima Endlelen (2018), which explores the painful impact of infidelity on women, and Waphila Befungile (2020), a true story about rising above hardship.
Her new book, Hard Work and Determination, is aimed at young readers and carries a strong message of hope.
“This book was inspired by my life and by the stories of others who kept going despite the odds. I want young people to know that with effort and persistence, they can achieve great things,” Maphosa said.
Growing up in a home marked by poverty and hardship, Maphosa credits her parents’ hard work as the driving force behind her determination to succeed.
As a writer, she chooses themes that motivate and empower.
“My stories come from personal experience, what I observe in others, and deep research.”
Her creative process focuses on writing realistic characters and authentic dialogue.
“I aim to write stories that people can see themselves in, with messages that leave a lasting impact,” she added.
Maphosa is also open to working with fellow creatives, including filmmakers and authors, to bring her stories to new platforms.
“Collaboration is key. I believe more stories can be told through film or theatre. I’m excited about exploring those formats,” she said.
With Hard Work and Determination, Maphosa hopes to reach and inspire young minds, believing that every story can spark change.
“Writing for youth is important because our early years shape who we become,” she said. – Follow @MbuleloMpofu on X
