Firefighter stipend program expanded for wildfire training
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The New York Volunteer Firefighter Training Stipend program has been expanded to reimburse $250, per student, in costs related to Basic Wildland Fire Suppression Training, according to Governor Kathy Hochul. The reimbursement, however, is limited to a first-time completion of the course.
The training covers wildland firefighting responsibilities, fire behavior, weather and other factors related to wildland firefighting. According to the governor, the trainings will be led by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and are designed to give new firefighters the skills needed when tackling wildfires.
"Volunteer firefighters make immense sacrifices for their communities, and as Governor, I am committed to supporting and honoring their service and dedication," Hochul said. "By expanding this program to cover wildland firefighting training, we are breaking down further barriers for prospective recruits and ensuring they have the crucial skills and training they need to keep their communities safe."
According to the state, within the last two years, there has been 268 wildfires that burned almost 8,000 acres of land, not including the Jennings Creek wildfire. The Jennings Creek fire spread over 5,000 acres in 14 days, resulting in the response of over 420 fire companies to assist.
"Now more than ever it is crucial to make training as accessible and affordable as possible for those who work to keep us safe. Last year’s Jennings Creek fire was a firsthand example of why it is so important that structural firefighters be trained to handle wildland fires, too," said Jackie Bray, Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner. "We thank the men and women who comprise New York’s volunteer fire service and encourage them to take advantage of these training opportunities."
The stipend program also includes reimbursements for interior and exterior firefighting and fire officer trainings. For more information on the program or to apply, visit the state's website.
