Newark Airport Taking Major Step Forward On June 2
Newark Liberty International Airport shared encouraging news Monday that should ease concerns for those traveling in the coming weeks.
Unfortunately, Newark Liberty International Airport has made headlines multiple times in the past six weeks due to air traffic control outages. On April 28, the ATC computer screens went dark for roughly 60-90 seconds. Less than two weeks later, the airport reported yet another outage.
In addition to dealing with ATC outages, Newark Liberty International Airport has been without one of its main runways for over a month. Luckily for those traveling in and out of Newark, that won't be the case any longer.
Newark officially reopened runway 4L-22R this Monday. Initially, this $121 million routine rehabilitation was expected to keep this runway closed until June 15.
With 4L-22R back and running, Newark should have six more flights taking off and landing per hour. This should help make things a bit less stressful for everyone working at the airport.
As for Newark's ATC concerns, Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy said a fiberoptic cable that's been placed between Philadelphia and New York could eliminate that problem.
"It’s been laid, and we’re doing some of the connections right now, and then we have to test it. I don’t want to over promise and under deliver," Duffy said. "If it all goes well, we should be able to turn over this new fiber line at the start of July."
Things are looking up for Newark Liberty International Airport just in time for the summer.
