Mayfield man admits to stealing pills from Walgreens
FONDA, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A Mayfield man has pleaded guilty to breaking into a Walgreens and stealing narcotic prescription pills. According to the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office, Chan Sonderfan, 39, faces 5 years in prison.
According to the DA's office, on Monday, a trial was set to begin when Sonderfan admitted to breaking into a Walgreens in Amsterdam and taking multiple pill bottles, which he intended to sell. He also admitted to resisting arrest.
Sonderfan was arrested in August 2024 after deputies found him inside the Walgreens building. He was charged with the following offenses:
- Third-degree burglary
- Third-degree criminal mischief
- Third-degree criminal possession of a weapon
- Seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance
- Possession of burglar’s tools
- Petit larceny
On Monday, Sonderfan pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.
According to officials, the response of the sheriff's office and the evidence collected helped ensure Sonderfan would be held accountable.
Sonderfan is expected to be sentenced in August, to five years in prison, followed by three years of probation. He will also be required to pay restitution to Walgreens.
