Stern told his listeners that he’d had dinner with Joel several weeks ago and that the “Uptown Girl” singer is “doing fine.” “He does have issues,” Stern conceded, “but he said, ‘Yeah, you can tell people, I’m not dying,’” the former shock jock added. “He wants people to know that. He’s got to deal with some medical stuff, but he was delightful.”
Stern explained to his longtime co-host, Robin Quivers, that he and Joel shared a “great conversation” during a celebration of the musician’s 76th birthday back in May. Stern even “brought out a guitar” during the party, but joked that Joel “threw up” after his rendition of “Happy Birthday.” “He didn’t seem real impressed,” Stern admitted.

Joel cancelled the remainder of his scheduled tour dates on May 23 following his diagnosis with NPH, a brain condition which leads to an excess buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain ventricles that can affect hearing, vision and balance. In the statement, a representative said Joel is “thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.”
