Trump expresses doubts about future of working with Musk
President Donald Trump and Tesla and X billionaire Elon Musk have worked together for months to cut fraud, waste and corruption in government spending.
Reports suggest together they were able to pare the bills sent to taxpayers by some $170 billion, and more work is on tap although Musk’s time as a temporary federal employee is over.
But Trump now has confirmed he’s unsure about work with Musk in the future, after the SpaceX genius criticized the “big beautiful” bill that Congress is developing to address Trump’s priorities.
He wants much larger cuts in spending, while Trump is working with a fractious Congress where he has only a margin for error in the House and a number of fighting priorities among the GOP on the project.
The Daily Signal said Trump confirmed, “I’m very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here, better than you people. Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore.”
“Trump suggested Musk had turned against the bill because of cuts to the elective vehicle mandate,” the report explained.
Trump explained that Musk, “He knew everything about it and he had no problem. But then all of a sudden he had a problem, and he only developed the problem when he found out that we’re gonna have to cut the EV mandate because that’s billions and billions of dollars, and it really is unfair.”
Meanwhile, Musk has been resurrecting old social media statements from Trump calling for an elimination of deficit spending and penalties for those who would not work toward that goal.
Musk has been urging members of Congress to kill the bill.
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” Musk wrote. “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
The report continued, “Trump said in the Oval Office Thursday that he has ‘always liked Elon’ but was surprised to see criticism of the ‘incredible’ bill. Trump said he would prefer Musk to criticize him than the bill because it’s the ‘biggest tax cut in history.’ Musk quickly responded to Trump’s statements, accusing the president of ‘ingratitude’ for his work on Trump’s campaign.”
He charged, “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.”
The Trump bill has been passed by the House, and now is pending in the Senate.
Musk openly has complained that the plan, supported by the GOP in Congress now, adds trillions of dollars to America’s national debt.
