Why Walmart’s Cake Artists Are Winning Over America
In a retail world driven by volume, efficiency and automation, you might assume the best-paid hourly employees at Walmart are in tech-heavy departments or managing complex logistics. But the real icing on the cake? It’s cake decorators.
The Associated Press reported that Walmart confirmed this week that its cake decorators earn more on average than any other hourly position in a typical U.S. store, excluding managers. At $19.25 an hour, they outpace the $18.25 average for non-managerial roles across the company. Some decorators are pulling in more than $24 an hour—an impressive wage in an industry often criticized for stagnant pay.
The timing isn’t random. With graduation season in full swing, Walmart’s 6,200 decorators are busier than ever, pumping out over a million custom cakes in May and June alone. And with the help of TikTok, they’re turning affordable desserts into viral sensations.

These aren’t your typical supermarket cakes. Walmart’s decorators are turning frozen sheet cakes into customized creations that mimic sushi rolls, burning paper toppers that reveal surprise images underneath, and piping vintage heart-shaped cakes with ornate borders that recall the bakery glory days. A viral $24 bouquet cake made of frosted cupcakes racked up nearly half a million views. And that buzz is turning into repeat customers.
While critics argue these low-cost creations undercut local bakeries, customers don’t seem to mind. A custom Walmart sheet cake that feeds 96 people starts at just $59—often half the price of an independent bakery. Add fillings and designs, and it’s still a deal.

Walmart’s decorators may not be baking from scratch, but they’re bringing serious skill to the job. Precision piping, trending designs, and speed under pressure have become part of the role, and the pay reflects it.
In an economy where wages are still catching up, the decorators piping roses and drizzling caramel just might have one of the sweetest gigs around.
