Service Oklahoma warns residents of text scam
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - Service Oklahoma is warning residents of a recent scam impersonating state government agencies like the Department of Motor Vehicles.
According to Service OK, the messages say the person may have unpaid traffic violations that must be taken care of right away to avoid penalties. The messages also include a suspicious link and various threats like license suspension, legal action and negative credit reporting.
Officials say these messages are not legitimate. They are a part of a larger scam targeting people nationwide.
Service OK is reminding residents:
- We do not contact individuals by text or phone to request payment or personal financial information.
- Our licensed operators also do not send payment requests by phone or text message.
If you receive a message like this:
- Do not click links or respond.
- Delete or report the text as spam.
- Do not share personal or financial information.
- If you clicked a link or submitted information, take steps immediately to secure your accounts.
"Chances are, in the past few days you've gotten a text like this (We have gotten quite a few reports). THIS IS A SCAM! The "Oklahoma DMV" will never send you a text to receive payment. Also, never click on the link or any unknown link." said the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office.
