Rory McIlroy Suffers Awful Final Round Before U.S. Open. Here's His Score
In the days leading up to the RBC Canadian Open, Rory McIlroy finally addressed his driver being deemed "no longer permissible" ahead of the PGA Championship where he finished 3-over and 15 shots back of Scottie Scheffler, who went on to win the tournament.
"I was a little pissed off because I knew that Scottie's driver had failed on Monday, but my name was the one that was leaked," McIlroy said. "It was supposed to stay confidential. Two members of the media were the ones that leaked it. Again, I didn't want to get up there and say something that I regretted, either, because I'm trying to protect Scottie. I don't want to mention his name. I'm trying to protect TaylorMade. I'm trying to protect the USGA, PGA of America, myself."
McIlroy also revealed why he decided to skip media sessions in all four days of competition - a rarity for one of golf's fan favorites.
"I didn't play well the first day, so I wanted to go practice, so that was fine," McIlroy said. "Second day, we finished late. I wanted to go back and see [daughter] Poppy before she went to bed. The driver news broke. I didn't really want to speak on that.
The five-time major winner might want to skip his media availability following a brutal second round at the RBC Canadian Open on Friday, June 6. McIlroy fired a 1-over, 71 on Thursday, June 5 and needed a strong second round to make the cut as most of the field went low.
Instead, the grand slam winner carded a quadruple bogey on No. 5 after starting his round with four straight pars. Three more bogeys and a double-bogey before his first birdie of the day at No. 15 but gave it back two holes later. He finished the day with his second and final birdie on No. 18 to finish with an 8-over, 78.
