Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner Make Wild French Open History
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner engaged in an epic back-and-forth in the final at Roland Garros Sunday.
Alcaraz, the No. 2 player in the world and reigning French Open champion, outlasted Sinner, the top-ranked player in the world and two-time Australian Open winner. The two elite talents split the first four sets before Alcaraz edged Sinner in the fifth deciding set to capture his second-straight title in Paris.
Sinner won the first two sets 6-4. 7-6 before Alcaraz rallied and won the next three 6-, 7-6, 7-6. The evenly-matched showdown surpassed the previous record for longest French Open final.
Mats Wilander's four-set win over Guillermo Vilas in 1982 took four hours and 42 minutes, a mark Alcaraz and Sinner topped a short time ago.
At five hours and 29 minutes, Alcaraz and Sinner obliterated the old record and created a new one that will be nearly impossible to top.

Carlos Alcaraz saves three championship points to claim his fifth grand slam title and second-consecutive Roland Garros title at the cost of Jannik Sinner. 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6.
Their battle was the longest French Open final in history, 5 hours and 29 mins.
Sunday's win is the fifth Grand Slam victory for the Alcaraz. The Villena, Spain native has now won back-to-back French Open and Wimbledon crowns, and will look to make it three in a row at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club next month.
Sinner, meanwhile, is the reigning U.S. Open champion and has recorded consecutive Australian Open victories. His heartbreaking loss today might knock the Italian star from the top spot of the world rankings, but it does nothing to diminish his standing as one of the best players in the sport.
All-time, Alcaraz owns a 8-4 head-to-head advantage over Sinner, having won their last five matchups, including two this year alone.
We'll see if these two meet again in London in July. They have faced each other once before at Wimbledon, with Sinner beating Alcaraz in the Round of 16 there three years ago.
