Flau’jae Johnson Breaks Silence on Angel Reese Rift
The championship bond remains, but the friendship is over.
LSU guard Flau’jae Johnson has officially confirmed that she and former teammate Angel Reese are no longer friends. During a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Johnson addressed the rumors that had been circulating for months and didn’t shy away from the truth.
“We’re not friends,” the 21-year-old said plainly. “But that bond we had, and that thing we did together, win the national championship, you can never take that away from us.”
The two basketball stars helped lead the LSU Tigers to a historic victory over Caitlin Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2023 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship. On and off the court, Johnson and Reese appeared inseparable — until the headlines started hinting at tension behind the scenes and fans noticed the two no longer interacted publicly.
Johnson cited “a lot of media” and “locker room stuff” as the main drivers behind the split. She didn’t go into detail but acknowledged, “Stuff happens. You wish it didn’t, but it do. And you just gotta grow.”
While the fallout may have changed their relationship, it hasn’t shaken Johnson’s support for her former teammate. She praised Reese’s early success in the WNBA with the Chicago Sky and said she still defends her online.
“I be on social media clowning the folks that be trying to talk down on her. I’m just proud of her.”
The rift may go beyond the two players. Tensions between their families surfaced in late 2023, when a feud between their mothers played out on social media, adding fuel to the fire and keeping fans speculating.
Despite it all, Johnson made one thing clear: she’s moved forward, no grudges attached. The friendship may have ended, but the respect remains between these two former teammates who've gone their separate ways.
