Kenyan Court Grants Zahir Qadir one month to appeal extradition to the US
Kenyan court has granted Zahir Qadir, former Afghanistan deputy speaker, one month to appeal his extradition to the US.
According to reports, Zahir Qadir, the former Deputy Speaker of Afghanistan’s House of Representatives, stated that the Kenyan court has granted him one month to submit an appeal. During this time, Mr. Qadir will provide the necessary documents to address the charges in court.
On Saturday, June 14, report stated that Mr. Qadir’s lawyers had requested one month from the court to present an explanation regarding the allegations. They added that during this period, his lawyers would present documents and videos to respond to the accusations.
Mr. Qadir’s lawyer had requested the court to delay the execution of the sentence temporarily to allow time for the appeal. However, the judge rejected this request, stating that the appeal could be filed without postponing the ruling.
The Nairobi court had previously decided that Mr. Qadir should be extradited to the United States for trial on charges of drug trafficking and possession of illegal weapons. Mr. Qadir was arrested in Nairobi on April 14 while traveling from Qatar to Kenya. The Southern District Court of New York had issued an arrest warrant for him on March 25, and he faces charges related to drug trafficking and conspiracy to possess heavy weapons.
Earlier, the Taliban had promised to seriously investigate the case of this former government official. Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s Foreign Minister, met with Mr. Qadir’s family and stated that they would take necessary steps “within their capacity” in this regard. Mr. Qadir’s family has once again urged the Taliban to take action for his release.
Zahir Qadir was arrested in Nairobi on April 29 of this year on charges of “attempting to traffic drugs” and “illegally transferring weapons,” following a U.S. request. A court in Nairobi ordered that he remain in police custody while the process of his extradition to the United States begins.
