US Minnesota Lawmaker and Husband killed in suspected political shooting
Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in a suspected politically motivated shooting, with another senator injured.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz confirmed the tragic shooting of Melissa Hortman, the senior Democratic representative in the state legislature, and her husband on Saturday morning. Walz stated that the attack appeared to have a “political motive.”
In a related incident, the assailant also targeted Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife. The governor reported that Hoffman and his wife were injured and have undergone surgery for their wounds.
According to security officials, the suspect, identified as 57-year-old Vance Bolter, has been linked to the attack. Authorities found documents in the suspect’s vehicle mentioning the names of “several lawmakers and other officials.” A security official added that Bolter worked for a private security company.
The suspect fled the scene after the attack, and a wide-ranging operation is underway to apprehend him. Authorities have expressed concern over the motives behind this violent act.
The shooting has sparked widespread condemnation. U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the violence, asserting that such acts of violence are unacceptable in the United States. Former President Joe Biden urged Americans to unite against hatred and extremism, calling the attack a “heinous act” that should never have happened in the country.
This tragic event highlights the growing political tensions and concerns over the safety of public officials. It also raises questions about the increasing rhetoric of violence within the political landscape.
