Benson Boone Responds to Online Hate With Teaser for Latest Single, ‘Mr. Electric Blue’
Benson Boone had an epic response to the hate he’s received online. The 22-year-old singer-songwriter just posted a teaser for his latest single, “Mr. Electric Blue,” with a video clip that shows that singing and backflipping aren’t his only talents.
In the video, Boone pays a visit to his record company’s office, where he’s told he needs to step things up. The “Mystical Magical” singer, who is wearing a t-shirt that says “One Hit Wonder” on it, appears stunned when the industry exec asks him, “Have you not been on the internet?”
“Everything's terrible, Benson!” the Industry Plant Records boss tells him. “We put all of our money into Moon Beam Ice Cream and a backflip, and it's done absolutely horrible. What we need is something new. We need a new gimmick. Maybe good songwriting.”
After Boone cracks, “You know I can't do that,” the record company gives him seven days to raise $10 million that he now owes them.
The clip then segues into the opening strains of Boone’s upcoming single “Mr. Electric Blue.” “7 days baby⚡️???? run it up,” Boone captioned the teaser.
Fans had quite a reaction to Boone’s cheeky take on the criticism he’s received.
“Not the ‘One Hit Wonder’ shirt. Love you Benson,” one fan wrote in the comment section on YouTube.
“I love that he owns the mean comments,” another wrote.
“Omg fully embracing the criticism is amazing! Having a listening party next Friday baby!” a third fan agreed.
“I think we have discovered your New Talent ‘ACTING,’" another added.
Boone, who is known for his flowery lyrics, retro jumpsuits, and onstage backflips, previously questioned why he receives so much backlash online.
In a now-deleted TikTok, he asked critics to at least "have a good reason" for their hatred of him and his music. "At least say something valid like 'he low key just flips everywhere can he [do] anything else?'" Boone wrote in April, per People magazine.
“Mr. Electric Blue” will be released on June 20, the same day Boone’s American Heart album drops. The Warner Records release has already featured the singles “Sorry I’m Here for Someone Else,” “Mystical Magical,” and “Momma Song.”
