Gwanda is officially on the modelling map.
Five pint-sized fashionistas from Matabeleland South’s mining town took the spotlight by storm at the third edition of the Little Mr and Miss Africa Zimbabwe pageant. They walked away with top crowns and turned heads in the process.
The rising stars Thandolwethu Joga (14), Queen Xesha Sibanda (6), Minenhle Adorable Moyo (6), Princess Trinity Bhebhe (5) and Enhle Megan Sibanda (3) represented Planet Kadder Academy Models, a Gwanda-based talent hub that is grooming young models to conquer the runway and life.
It was a clean sweep.
Queen Xesha Sibanda was crowned 1st Runner-Up Toto Miss Africa Zimbabwe
Minenhle Adorable Moyo grabbed 2nd Runner-Up
Princess Trinity Bhebhe scooped 3rd Runner-Up
Enhle Megan Sibanda charmed her way to the Darling of the Crown Award
Teen stunner Thandolwethu Joga was named Teen Miss Africa Ambassador and opened the show with a killer dance routine
Academy founder, actress and singer Proficience “Kadder” Cadder could not hide her joy.
“Our girls did not just represent Gwanda. They represented the whole of Matabeleland South. They spoke confidently, danced gracefully and wore their pride like crowns,” she said.
But this was no ordinary beauty pageant. The kids were judged on community projects too, and the Gwanda team took it up a notch with presentations on drug and substance abuse awareness. The project is part of a youth fundraising drive to help local kids develop their talents while steering clear of dangerous habits.
The boot camp also featured cultural exchange, talent pre-judging and a wholesome pyjama party where contestants exchanged gifts in the spirit of Ubuntu.
“It was tough. They had to speak during cultural and introduction rounds, but they held their own. That is what we train for. Confidence, courage and culture,” said Kadder.
From the dusty streets of Gwanda to the national catwalk, these young queens are proving that big dreams do live in small towns.
