Lafayette Schools restructuring special education programs
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- The Lafayette Parish School System has announced what it calls a "strategic restructuring" of its Special Education Department leadership.
In a news release the district said its new two-pronged leadership model divides oversight between compliance and instruction, which is "designed to better serve the diverse and growing needs of students with exceptionalities across Lafayette Parish."
Falin Key has been named Director of Special Education – Assessment & Compliance and Devin Soeseno has been named Director of Special Education – Curriculum & Instruction.
The release said nearly 11% of LPSS students receive special education support.
“This two-part leadership structure allows us to meet the unique needs of our students more effectively and with greater intention,” said Superintendent Francis Touchet, Jr. “LPSS serves students in ways not offered by any other schools in Lafayette Parish. Our responsibility is to provide every child who walks through our doors with access to growth, opportunity, and the support they need to thrive. These appointments reflect our deep commitment to that mission.”
Key returns to LPSS after serving as Director of Special Education in Iberia Parish and mentoring emerging leaders through the Louisiana Department of Education’s SPED Fellows Academy. She previously held leadership roles in Lafayette as a Pupil Appraisal Team Leader and Program Supervisor.
Soeseno began her LPSS career as a special education teacher at Ernest Gallet and Ridge Elementary and later served as a Special Education Program Supervisor, Principal of Carencro Catholic School, and most recently as a district-level instructional leader.
"With this innovative structure, LPSS is reinforcing its dedication to providing high-quality special education services, ensuring that all students—regardless of ability—are fully supported throughout their educational journey," the release said.
