Eu allocates €161 Million in Humanitarian Aid to Afghanistan
The EU has pledged €161 million in humanitarian aid to support vulnerable Afghans with food, health, education, and refugee assistance.
According to the statement, the funds will be used to meet the urgent needs of Afghanistan people across multiple sectors, including food security, healthcare, access to clean drinking water, education, and other essential services. The aid comes amid worsening poverty and displacement throughout the country.
More than €141 million of the total amount will be directly allocated to humanitarian organizations operating inside Afghanistan. These funds are intended to support the most vulnerable populations, including women, children, and internally displaced persons (IDPs), through local and international NGOs.
An additional €20 million will be used to assist Afghan refugees residing in Iran and Pakistan. This portion of the aid will help provide shelter, food supplies, and medical services to those living in refugee camps or urban settlements outside Afghanistan.
Andreas Papaconstantinou, Director for the Middle East and Central Asia at the EU Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), confirmed that nearly 100 tons of critical relief supplies have already been airlifted to Kabul through a humanitarian corridor and delivered to partner aid agencies.
Afghanistan remains one of the most severe humanitarian hotspots in the world. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), over 28 million people—more than two-thirds of the population—require urgent humanitarian assistance due to ongoing economic collapse, conflict, and climate-related disasters.
The EU’s continued support signals its commitment to alleviate suffering in Afghanistan despite diplomatic complexities. By working through trusted humanitarian partners, the EU aims to bypass political barriers and ensure aid reaches those in need.
As the situation remains volatile, the European Commission has called on the international community to step up coordinated efforts and funding commitments to prevent further deterioration of humanitarian conditions in Afghanistan.
