Germany’s Merz: Israel Doing ‘Dirty work’ in Iran
Germany’s Chancellor Merz stated that Israel is doing the “dirty work” by targeting Iranian sites, addressing global security concerns.
Friedrich Merz, the newly appointed Chancellor of Germany, expressed strong support for Israel’s recent attacks on Iran’s nuclear and military facilities during a G7 summit in Canada. He described the Western actions, which have been carried out by Israel, as a necessary “dirty job” for Israel to handle. Merz’s comments came in a controversial interview on June 17 with German network ZDF, where he openly defended Israel’s military actions.
Merz praised the courage of Israel’s military and government, highlighting their role in targeting Iran’s regime, which he accused of fueling death and destruction through its support of Hezbollah, Hamas, and its provision of drones to Russia. He emphasized that without these attacks, the world would likely continue to witness the reign of terror imposed by Iran’s government.
The German Chancellor also warned that if Iran does not return to nuclear negotiations, the “complete destruction” of Iran’s nuclear weapons program might become an option. He pointed out that while Israel may lack the capability to destroy deep facilities like Fordow, the United States, with its GBU-57 bunker-busting bombs, could accomplish this task.
According to Reuters, Merz further stated that Israel’s recent attacks had severely weakened Iran’s leadership, creating uncertainty about the future of the country. This assessment suggests that Israel’s efforts to dismantle Iran’s nuclear ambitions are significantly altering the political and military landscape of the region.
Merz’s remarks indicate a growing alignment between Germany and Israel on the issue of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, with both countries sharing concerns over the potential for a nuclear-armed Iran. While Germany has historically advocated for diplomacy, Merz’s recent support for military action suggests a shift toward a more hardline stance within the European Union regarding Iran.
The future of negotiations with Iran remains uncertain. With escalating military actions and tough rhetoric from world leaders, the possibility of diplomatic solutions appears to be increasingly under threat.
