First Trailer for Sequel to ‘90s Horror Classic Reveals First Look at Returning Stars
Cargo pants and straight-leg jeans aren’t the only ‘90s staples that are making a comeback.
In the summer of 1997, horror movie fans saw what happened when Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were stalked by a homicidal fisherman in I Know What You Did Last Summer. This summer, horror movie fans will get to witness much of the same when that movie’s legacy sequel, also titled I Know What You Did Last Summer, arrives in theaters on July 18.

Except this time, Hewitt and Prinze are helping a new group of friends try to navigate how to survive a vengeance-seeking lunatic.
On Tuesday, the first trailer for Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s sequel to the hit ‘90s thriller arrived, and gave fans their first best look at how Hewitt and Prinze’s characters from the original movie and its 1998 sequel—Julie James and Ray Bronson, respectively—will fit into this all-new take on the story.

From the trailer, we can discern that the plot to the new film seems very much in line with the original film: a group of young friends in Southport, North Carolina, are involved in a car accident in which they seemingly kill someone. Rather than call the police, and save themselves a massive headache, they instead decide to pretend it never happened. Which seems to work until a year later, when they all start receiving anonymous letters from someone who tells them, yep, you guessed it: “I know what you did last summer.”
In the case of the updated film, the friend group has one asset the teens in the original film did not: they can tap both Julie and Ray for intel on how to survive a hook-wielding psychopath. Both Hewitt and Prinze seem ready to help in the brand-new trailer, which you can see below.
