What Kind of Litter Can You Use?
The Litter-Robot 4 works best with a clumping litter. Whisker recommends a “high-quality, standard-weight, clay-based clumping litter” for best results. I use Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Unscented Clumping litter, and it works great. It never sticks to the globe of the Litter-Robot, and I have never noticed an odor or run into any issues with it.
The only litters that are off limits are translucent or white-colored litter (most often seen in crystal litter) because they may impact the litter level and Drawer Full Indicator accuracy in Litter-Robot 4.
How Do You Clean a Litter Robot?
Pet waste is collected in a bag-lined drawer beneath the globe. All you need to do is empty out the drawer when it gets full. It’s as simple as taking out your trash. Litter drawer bags can be purchased from Whisker, or you can choose Litter-Robot-compatible drawer liners from Amazon (these are the ones I use and love).
About once a month, I remove the globe to clean the inside and remove any litter that has fallen into the unit to ensure the globe can rotate and filter the litter correctly. This takes about five minutes and is super simple to do.

- Odor elimination: One of my favorite features of the Litter-Robot 4 is that there is literally no smell, ever. Because the waste is scooped a few minutes after being deposited, it never gets a chance to stink up your house.
- Ease: I only have one cat, so the Litter-Robot only needs to be emptied once every three weeks. I can’t emphasize enough what a relief and time saver it is to not have to scoop poop every day.
- Quiet: The Litter-Robot is truly whisper-quiet. If you keep your unit in a high-traffic area and are worried about the noise, let me assure you that it is virtually noiseless. Really, the only sound I ever notice is the sound of the litter being sifted and dropped into the drawer, but it’s no noisier than the sound of digging and scooping out a traditional litter box.

- Price: It’s not a cheap item. It’s definitely a luxury purchase, but if you can swing it, I you will not regret the investment.
- Whisker App: My only real gripe with the Litter-Robot 4 is the Whisker app that can be used to control and monitor the unit. While it’s mostly a great resource and provides lots of valuable info, including your cat’s weight, the app frequently logs me out, and when I try to log back in, it tells me the password is incorrect and won’t allow me to reset the password myself. In the four months I’ve used the unit and app, this has happened twice, and I’ve had to reach out to customer support to regain access. While not a huge issue, it can be frustrating. But it’s worth noting that the app isn’t required for the unit to operate. If you experience technical issues with the app, the Litter-Robot will still work perfectly fine; you just won’t have access to the data in the app. It’s definitely not a deal breaker, just an occasional slight inconvenience that is easily remedied. It’s also worth noting that WHisker has great customer service, and they have been helpful and great to work with each time.

I’m not usually a splurgey spender, but I can honestly say this is one luxury purchase you won’t regret. Especially if you have multiple cats and are concerned about odor.
