Putin on Khamenei assassination claim: “I don’t want to discuss it”
Putin declined to comment on claims of a plot to assassinate Iran’s leader, urging diplomacy and peaceful resolution instead.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has refused to comment on claims of a joint U.S.-Israel plan to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The remarks were made during a closed-door session with senior Russian news editors in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, June 18.
“I have no interest in discussing this,” Putin stated, sidestepping the controversy. His comment comes amid heightened regional tensions following intensified conflict between Iran and Israel in recent weeks.
Instead, Putin stressed the urgent need for a negotiated settlement. He emphasized that all parties must find a path to end the hostilities and reach an agreement that ensures both Israel’s security and Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy under international law.
The Russian president added that, so far, Iran’s underground uranium enrichment infrastructure remains undamaged. This statement follows concerns about targeted military strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Putin also revealed that he has held talks with former U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding potential de-escalation. He said Moscow has offered proposals to Washington, Tel Aviv, and Tehran aimed at resolving the conflict diplomatically.
Putin clarified that the strategic partnership between Russia and Iran does not include military cooperation. He added that Iran has not requested any weapons from Russia amid the current crisis, a notable distinction given ongoing speculation about broader regional military alignments.
As tensions escalate, Russia appears to be positioning itself as a potential mediator while distancing itself from direct military involvement. Moscow’s push for diplomacy—paired with its neutral tone on explosive allegations—signals an effort to maintain influence in the Middle East without deepening its entanglement.
