There is no shortage of running shoes on the market that utilize ergonomic designs, space-aged materials, and every other possible feature to maximize performance. Many of them, unfortunately, are too hideous for day-to-day wear. Fortunately, New Balance does make a high-performing running shoe that looks like a heritage sneaker. And even more fortunately, select colors are 40% off at Nordstrom right now.
The New Balance 2002R sneaker is normally $145, but some are going for just $86 right now, a nearly $60 price cut. They're on sale in black and white, tan, and green, but it's the green that has the best size availability remaining. These sneakers have received nearly 600 five-star ratings and reviews calling them “crazy comfortable” with a “standout design” that’s “super versatile.”

While this shoe looks like the New Balances that have adorned the feet of New Englanders since the ‘60s, it has a ton of modern features hiding in plain sight. The Abzorb impact-resistant foam covers the whole foot, an N-ergy outsole helps absorb shock, and the Stability Web construction provides arch support without adding a ton of weight. The mesh upper has suede detailing and the classic N mark on both sides of the shoe.
One reviewer wrote that “these shoes combine style and comfort in the best way possible” because “the cushioning is perfect for all-day wear, offering just the right balance of support without being too bulky” and the design is “sleek, retro-inspired, and super versatile.” Closer examination reveals that “the quality is clear in both the materials and the construction,” and that these shoes “feel built to last.”
Another satisfied customer called these “comfortable and supportive” sneakers “the universal shoe for all occasions.” We’d urge you not to wear them to a black-tie wedding, but we would have to agree with this shopper in saying that they’re great for “walking, pickleball, bike riding, volleyball, and basketball.”
Two other on-sale colorways are out of stock or nearly out of stock, and the Dark Moss/Convert Green version of these New Balance 2002R sneakers is almost certainly next. The message: don’t delay, as it would be a shame to miss out on a pair of sneakers this great at a price this low.
