Popular Chocolate Recalled Over Allergy Concerns
There have been several recent snack recalls throughout the United States over potential undeclared allergens, which can put those sensitive to the particular ingredient at risk.
One of the latest recalls involves the Weaver Nut Company, which issued a warning earlier this week regarding its semi-sweet chocolate nonpareils. According to the recall announcement from the Food and Drug Administration, the candies potentially contain milk allergens which had not been clearly identified.
According to the Mayo Clinic, milk allergy is one of the most common food allergies in children. Signs of a mild allergic reaction include wheezing, vomiting, hives and digestive problems, while a more severe allergy can cause anaphylaxis, which can be life threatening.
The particular Weaver Nut Company nonpareils affected by the recall are their semi-sweet chocolate white seeds and Christmas seeds. The candies were sold in various grocery stores and retailers throughout the United States.
Lot numbers for the multi-colored Christmas seeds are 204206, 204207, 204208, 204209, 204212, 224225, while the ones for the white seeds are 204214-RL, 204214, 204215, 224221, 224222, 224223, 135215, 135216, 135217, 135220, 135221, 145204, 145205-1, 145207-1, 145210-1.
Thankfully, no illnesses have been reported by anyone who consumed the chocolates.
"The issue was discovered through a wholesale customer complaint upon receipt of shipment misaligned with updated product spec. followed by a lab test to confirm the milk presence," says the recall announcement.
"Consumers who have purchased the affected product and have a milk allergy are urged not to consume it. If sensitive to milk allergy, the product should be discarded immediately or for a full refund returned to the place of purchase."
