Beloved Restaurant Permanently Closing After Only 10 Months
No matter how long a local restaurant or bar has been part of the community, it's always a heartbreaker when that place has to shut down. Sometimes, it can hurt just as much to say farewell to a newer place, because there's so much hope and excitement around having a new bar or restaurant in town.
According to the National Restaurant Association, per Toast, there's a 30 percent failure rate in the restaurant industry. So, one in three bars are expected to close down within their first year.
Toast adds, "The failure rate often varies depending on location, demographics, and the type of bar being operated." They also say that establishments "located in major metropolitan areas with high foot traffic and tourism may have a better chance of succeeding compared to those in suburban or rural locations."
Now, a local restaurant has closed its door after just 10 months in operation.
SaltRock Brewing Co. located in downtown Lansing, MI, has permanently closed. May 30 was the final day for the restaurant and brewery, which closed at the end of the day. The business opened in July 2024. While the restaurant hasn't announced its closure on social media, Yelp has it listed as officially closed.
SaltRock Brewing Co. brought a unique flavor to the downtown Lansing area. The brewery and restaurant served steaks, burgers, chicken, pasta and sandwiches, as well as unique desserts. SaltRock's homemade carrot cake was already legendary, even just being around for 10 months. SaltRock also offered a full menu of craft cocktails, wine, brewed cider, seltzer and on-tap beers.
The restaurant's Pure Michigan profile said that its mission was "to bring people back together inside a safe environment where they can enjoy a variety of quality craft beers, diverse food options that include upscale cuisine, outstanding customer service, and an atmosphere uniquely designed to enhance each experience."
