New York preps for off-year 2025 primary
ALBANY, N.Y. (NESTAR) — Before New Yorkers head to the polls in November to vote for mayors, sheriffs, county courthouses, and city councils, primaries are on for Tuesday, June 24. Early voting is already underway through June 22. This election cycle includes influential leaders in New York City, Buffalo, and Albany.
New York operates closed primaries, meaning that only voters who are registered with a specific political party can vote in that party's primary election. For example, a registered Democrat can only vote in the Democratic primary. And the reverse is also true: you can't vote at all in that Democratic primary unless you are a registered Democrat. You cannot vote if registered as an independent or with no party enrollment.
Early voting hours can change, with weekend hours typically from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday hours generally ending at 8 p.m., according to the New York State Board of Elections.
If voting by mail, your primary election ballot must have a postmark by June 24 and arrive by July 1. Or, you could deliver an absentee ballot to your county board of elections or a poll site in person by June 24.
For the general election, New Yorkers can vote early from October 26 through November 2, leading up to Election Day on Tuesday, November 4. New York's solid status as a blue state means that the winners of many local Democratic primaries often win the general election by default.
At issue in many of these races is sanctuary status and how—or to what extent that—local police should work with federal immigration agents.
