Hill vs. Rountree Jr. took place June 21 at the Baku Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan. Jamahal Hill (12-4, 1 no-contest) and Khalil Rountree Jr. (14-6, 1 no-contest) squared off in the main event clash. The fight aired live on ESPN.

Round 1

Sick final staredown between the two. No glove touch.

Rountree so relaxed, almost lethargic to start. That’s interesting gamesmanship. Both men circling, no one has thrown a strike yet through the first 55 seconds, but Hill throws a leg kick, and another. Rountree with a nasty low leg kick, and Hill answers.

Rip to the body with a jab from Rountree, more leg kicks from Hill. Rountree looks to be taking in all of the information right now, and Hill lands another nice low kick. Two minutes left, Rountree with a lead right hook, Hill seems unfazed by it. Good exchange, then a thumping calf kick by Rountree.

Rountree gets the better of an exchange and is starting to get some momentum. Final 30 seconds in the round that is certainly up for grabs. Rountree hammers a kick to the body of Hill, and that’s the final shot of the round.

Round 2

Super close first round, and Rountree is starting to land a bit more with aggression, changing up the location of his strikes to start the second. Hill lands a good left hand, then gets dropped with a leg kick from Rountree. Hill’s right calf is absolutely brutalized right now.

Hill throws a right hand, but he’s definitely compromised. Rountree is being real patient, lands another nasty leg kick. Hill is limping and in huge trouble.

Final two minutes and Rountree is waiting for Hill to make a move so he can counter. Hill throws a kick, Rountree finds the calf again, then the left calf, and Hill lands a punch. Clean right hook from Rountree, then a slip from Rountree, and Hill lands a nice right hand as Rountree stands. Final 30 seconds, and Hill gets nailed again with a calf kick. Two or three more of those and this one will be over.

Round 3

Hill needs a momentum shift, and quickly.

We’re off as they take the center of the cage. Hill comes up short with a punch, Rountree did not with his counter attack. Rountree creeping in, counters beautifully with a left hook. Hill keeping that right leg back as much as possible, but the action haas certainly slowed down in the third. Exchange by both, Rountree lands a nasty counter hook, then another hard leg kick. Hill trying to use a poker face.

Rountree drops Hill with a left hook. Hill is OK, but gets kicked hard in that leg again. Hill being very cautious now, Rountree tried to knock his head into the fourth row. Hill with a short right, Rountree with a nasty counter hook, a hard leg kick, a body kick, and another leg kick from Rountree who is starting to really pull away here.

Hill’s right calf is twice the size as his left due to the damage. Final 30 seconds and Rountree knocks Hill down hard with a right hook. Hill recovers and that’s the round. Two knockdowns gets Rountree a 10-8.

Round 4

Shoutout to Hill for his toughness, but he is getting thumped around in there.

Hill and Rountree are throwing heat, nothing landing. Hill stumbled back just putting weight on the right leg. Rountree’s corner telling him to follow up those leg kicks with more damage when he lands. Rountree with a left hook, another hard calf kick. Rountree counters with a brutal hook to the body, and hurts Hill up top with a knockdown. Hill back up in survival mode as he is having so much trouble with Rountree’s speed. Another huge overhand shot from Rountree stings Hill.

Final two minutes and it’s all Rountree in Round 4. Hill battling and hanging tough, but Hill is just not throwing nearly enough. Crowd getting a bit impatient here as Rountree hammers Hill with big shots. Another big leg kick, hard left hook from Rountree. Hill trying to be aggressive back, but this is one-way traffic through 20 minutes. Another hard right hook ends the round.

Round 5

Rountree out aggressive and rips Hill to the body, Hill was not expecting that.

Hill putting out the left jab, but that’s all he’s throwing in this fifth round. Rountree laying back now waiting for Hill to throw so he can counter, and that’s exactly what he did.

Overland left from Rountree finds the mark. Hill is still in here, but not much happening on either side, and the crowd is letting them know. Hill lands a shot. Final 1:45 left. Hill is shockingly not fighting like a guy down four rounds. Oblique kick by Rountree. Hill comes up short with a body shot, Rountree creeps in with a solid right hand.

Big exchange, and Hill needs a Hail Mary. Rountree leg kicks, then batters the body, Hill lands a shot. And they are face-to-face having a conversation. Seems like Hill is talking a little trash to Rountree for not having more heated exchanges, but not 100-percent sure.
