5 Health Issues That Can Be Dangerous During Heat Wave
A crippling heat wave has affected large portions of America over the last few days, and some areas are still going to be sweating this week.
Parts of the Midwest and Northeast are going to be in the triple digits this week, with over 250 daily heat records potentially being matched or broken. This comes after other regions endured their own scorching conditions last week and over the weekend.
Heat is the No. 1 weather killer in the United States, resulting in hundreds of deaths each year. Obviously, heat stroke and dehydration are critical things to avoid, and it is important to know the warning signs to watch out for.
Additionally, the heat can exacerbate preexisting illnesses, with potentially devastating consequences. The New York Post spoke with multiple doctors regarding what health issues could be dangerous in the extreme heat.
While there are more than just five issues affected by high temperatures, the ones mentioned by the professionals the Post interviewed were:
- Heart disease
- Kidney disease
- Respiratory diseases
- Psychiatric conditions or drug users
- Being on medications that affect the body's cooling process
In order to stay safe, Dr. Thomas Gut, Associate Chair of Medicine at Northwell’s Staten Island University Hospital, provided several tips.
- Drink half a glass of water per hour, or as instructed by your own doctor
- Consume drinks that contain electrolytes without added sugar
- Avoid coffee, soda and alcohol
- Stay in the shade or, better yet, indoors
- Avoid being in direct sunlight
- If you have to be in the sun, wear sunscreen and cover your head
- Cool off with a misting spray bottle with water
The American Red Cross also recommends making a plan to stay cool by seeking out air conditioning and wearing light, loose-fitting clothing.
Additionally, the Red Cross says people should stay connected to local weather and emergency alerts, and also prepare a collection of necessary supplies to get through the heat wave.
