Woman likely bitten by shark at Jones Beach: officials
NASSAU COUNTY (PIX11) -- A 20-year-old woman was likely bitten by a shark on Wednesday afternoon at Jones Beach State Park, according to New York State Parks.
The incident happened around 4:15 p.m. at the Central Mall beachfront.
The victim was waist deep in the surf when she sustained minor lacerations to her left foot and leg, officials say. The swimmer was taken to Nassau County University Medical Center Hospital for treatment.
The beachfront was closed as a drone searched for dangerous marine life. Swimming resumed Thursday morning.
After reviewing photos of the injury and situational information provided by individuals at the scene, DEC biologists reached the conclusion that the incident most likely involved a juvenile sand tiger shark.
Park Police, lifeguards, and staff remain on high alert and will continue to conduct patrols to help protect swimmers.
