Pakistan Army kills 30 militants near Afghanistan Border
Pakistan’s army killed 30 militants near the Afghanistan border, seizing weapons and preventing a major attack, amid rising cross-border security tensions.
Pakistan’s military has announced that its security forces killed at least 30 militants during an operation in North Waziristan, a tribal region near the country’s border with Afghanistan. According to the official statement released on Friday, July 4, the militants attempted to infiltrate Pakistani territory from Afghanistan and were described as being linked to India.
The army said that during the operation, a large cache of weapons and ammunition was seized. The statement added that security forces prevented a potentially deadly terrorist attack, describing the operation as a successful counterterrorism effort in a volatile border region.
In its statement, the Pakistan military referred to the militants as “Khawarij insurgents backed by India,” a term it previously used to describe members of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). In October 2024, the army officially labeled TTP as “Khawarij,” a historical term for extremist rebels.
Pakistan has also called on the Afghan Taliban authorities to prevent “foreign proxy groups” from using Afghanistan territory to plan or launch terrorist attacks against Pakistan. Islamabad has expressed ongoing concerns that TTP elements are being sheltered in Afghanistan.
This latest operation follows an earlier clash on June 24 in South Waziristan, where Pakistani forces engaged with militants, resulting in the deaths of 11 insurgents and 2 soldiers. These incidents highlight persistent security threats along the Afghanistan-Pakistan frontier, where militant infiltration and retaliatory operations have escalated in recent months.
Cross-border tensions have intensified since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021. Pakistan has accused Kabul of turning a blind eye to TTP activity, while the Taliban deny these allegations and have urged dialogue. International observers warn that without coordinated border security mechanisms, such incidents may further destabilize the region. The situation in Waziristan remains volatile and may require multilateral engagement to avoid a larger regional crisis.
