Neighbors commend quick action in Carencro fire caused by fireworks
CARENCRO, La. (KLFY) -- A house fire on Cainwood Court in Carencro broke out after improperly discarded fireworks sparked a blaze that damaged two homes.
The fire happened around 10:30 p.m., Friday. Firefighters from Carencro, Lafayette and Scott responded quickly, arriving to find flames already venting through the roof of the primary residence.
“I was just glad nobody got hurt,” said Caden Thibodeaux, who lives next door. “Apparently, my neighbor banged on all our windows to make sure nobody was inside.”
According to fire officials, used fireworks were thrown into a trash can before they were fully extinguished. The smoldering debris ignited a fire that quickly spread into the attic of the house.
Radiant heat from the flames also caused damage to Thibodeaux’s home.
“We just got some damage — some radiant heat damage on the side of our house and a little bit into our attic, but the flames didn’t get up in there,” he said.
Thibodeaux and his fiancée weren’t home at the time but received multiple calls from neighbors checking on them.
“I got multiple phone calls from three or four different people,” he said. “We have some really good neighbors.”
Thibodeaux praised the response time of emergency crews, saying the situation could have been far worse.
“It could have slid into our house,” he said. “But from what I understand, they were here lightning quick.”
No injuries were reported. The Carencro Fire Department is reminding the public to dispose of fireworks properly and ensure they are fully extinguished before discarding.
“Whenever it comes to the next Fourth of July,” Thibodeaux added, “make sure those fireworks are out.”
