Pet Lion attacks woman and two children in Lahore, Pakistan
A pet lion escaped its cage in Lahore and attacked a woman and two children, leaving them injured before authorities captured the animal.
A terrifying incident unfolded in Lahore, Pakistan, when a pet lion escaped its enclosure and attacked a woman and two young children in the Johar Town neighborhood.
The escape occurred on Thursday evening and was captured on CCTV footage that quickly went viral. The lion was seen leaping over a wall into a residential street and lunging at a woman carrying grocery bags. It then chased and injured two children, aged 5 and 7, inflicting wounds on their faces and arms.
All three victims were transported to the hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. According to police, the lion had escaped from an improperly secured enclosure on a private farm.
The owners attempted to hide the lion after recapturing it, transporting it in a vehicle to an unknown location. However, Lahore police apprehended three individuals within 12 hours. The lion has since been seized and transferred to the Wildlife Department.
Mohammad Faisal Kamran, Lahore’s Deputy Inspector General of Police Operations, confirmed the lion, an 11-month-old, is now housed at a wildlife park and is in good health.
Keeping wild animals like lions is illegal in urban areas of Pakistan but remains a symbol of wealth and status, particularly in Punjab. Ownership of such animals requires strict licensing, which the lion’s owner reportedly lacked.
Local media reported that the owner may face up to 7 years in prison or a fine of $17,500 under Pakistan’s Wildlife Protection Act.
This is not an isolated case. In December 2024, another lion escaped in Punjab and was fatally shot by guards. That incident prompted authorities to launch a wide-scale crackdown on illegal private ownership of wild animals.
Since then, the Punjab government has confiscated at least 13 lions and arrested five individuals involved in similar offenses.
The recent attack has reignited concerns over public safety and highlighted the urgent need for stronger enforcement of wildlife laws to prevent further incidents.
