Victim identified of July 4 Lake George drowning
LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Warren County Sheriff's Office has identified the woman who drowned while swimming at Harris Bay in Lake George on July 4. Deputies said Jaedyn Shomo, 21, of Menands, was found in 14 feet of water by divers.
Warren County Sheriff's Office and Lake George Park Commission members responded to Harris Bay around 5:21 p.m. after getting a call about the drowning. Deputies said five people were out on a pontoon boat, owned by one of the occupants' relatives, which was unanchored and drifting.
Three women, one of them Shomo, jumped off the boat to swim. Two of the women made it back to the boat, but Shomo struggled and slipped beneath the surface.
The 27-year-old from Schenectady who was driving the boat tried backing up closer to Shomo, but the boat lurched from rapid acceleration, and the two women were ejected. One of the women hit her head on the boat, sustaining a laceration.
The injured woman was treated at Glens Falls Hospital. The driver of the boat was brought back to the Warren County Sheriff's Office, gave a breath sample that showed he had a .08% blood alcohol content, and was charged with boating while intoxicated. He is scheduled to appear in Queensbury Town Court on July 21.
Shomo was a Class of 2022 graduate of Shaker High School and was a member of the girls' basketball team. North Colonie Central School Superintendent Kathleen Skeals said Shomo is deeply saddened to hear about the tragic passing of Shomo.
"Jaedyn made a positive impact at both Blue Creek, where she attended elementary school, and at Shaker High School," Skeals said. "Our thoughts go out to Jaedyn’s family and friends during this extremely difficult time."
