‘A Lot’ of California Residents Bracing for Punishment Following 4th of July
Fourth of July weekend came and went with Americans celebrating Independence Day.
As always, fireworks were a common sight across the country.
This year, the state of California made a firmer effort to crack down on the use of illegal fireworks.
California Governor Gavin Newsom's office stated that they had seized over 600,000 pounds of illegal fireworks before the holiday, demonstrating their aggressiveness in cracking down on this matter.
Additionally, California residents are subject to heavy fines for lighting off illegal fireworks, and some fines can even be sent by mail.
Sacramento Fire Department Captain Justin Sylvia told Fox40 that fines will be handed out to a large number of residents due to illegal fireworks usage. A 2025 ordinance even allows Sacramento to stack fines per firework.
“A lot of people are going to be wildly surprised when they get massive fines in the mail,” Sylvia said. “What may have been a $1,000 fine for one occurrence last year could now be $30,000 because you lit off so many."
According to the Fox report, violators are now fined per firework lit as opposed to per illegal fireworks occurrence, so it is a big change.
Law enforcement officials were riding in unmarked vehicles to spot offenders, and they even flew drones over areas to capture footage of the illegal fireworks being used.
As of July 5, the Sacramento Fire Department had already had 60 citations in the works, but more are likely coming as they continue to review the footage.
