Man accused of assaulting elderly Army veteran during Newport political protest
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man accused of assaulting an Army veteran during a political protest is facing a felony charge, the Lincoln County District Attorney's Office announced.
The indictment comes after Newport police arrested 41-year-old Jacob Busch after an investigation into an alleged assault in front of Newport City Hall during a political protest, Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office said.
Officials said video footage of the incident showed Busch quickly getting out of his parked car and running towards protesters before using his chest to push a 74-year-old Army veteran to the ground.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, the man fell backward, hitting his head against the concrete sidewalk, and was later taken to the hospital for his injuries.
Later that day, Busch was arrested for misdemeanor fourth-degree assault, and was initially held in custody with bail set at $75,000.
Officials said based on the extent of the victim’s injuries, and Busch’s criminal record, Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Thornicroft presented the case to a grand jury with additional charges.
On July 1, Busch was indicted for second-degree assault (serious physical injury), fourth-degree assault – felony (three prior convictions) and two counts of disorderly conduct.
Officials noted Busch was released by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office on July 3 and later arraigned out-of-custody on the July indictment. Busch is out on release and will return to court on August 25 for an early resolution conference, the District Attorney’s Office said.
“The Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office would like to thank the Newport Police Department for their swift response and extensive investigation into these allegations to ensure safety for all those who participate in lawful, orderly assembly,” the District Attorney’s Office said.
