Cupcakes for Kara: Bakery owner fights to fund daughter's college study
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- One Brooklyn mother is hoping her neighborhood will help her daughter make her college dreams come true.
The Bakery on Bergen is located in the heart of Prospect Heights. For 11 years, owner Akim Vann has operated the beloved bakery.
A former teacher and mathematician, Vann says it's more than a place to get a sweet treat: she's also feeding young minds. Back in 2020, PIX11's Monica Morales first met Vann when she was hosting math and baking classes for children in the community.
Vann lost her husband and has four children. Her 17-year-old daughter is now headed to college, but Vann doesn't know how she will make it work.
Vann loves the cupcakes for college idea, and has created her own cupcakes, which she calls Cupcakes for Kara. Her daughter Kara is studying French and art. Her dream is to become a globally known artist.
Vann hopes that with each cupcake sold, her daughter will be that much closer to her sweet road to success.
