Rankings Name 'Unhealthiest' Ice Cream Flavor
Ice cream isn't the kind of food your doctor would advise you to eat every day, but it's widely accepted as a treat enjoyed in moderation.
Traditional flavors like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry are likely at the top of the list for most ice cream lovers, but a few of the most exotic flavors have found their way to a new list - the "unhealthiest" ice cream flavors on the market.
The top honor - or biggest offense if you prefer - goes to Ben & Jerry's "Chunky Monkey."
Eat This, Not That says that the banana ice cream with walnuts and fudge chunks has 400 calories and 39 grams of sugar per each 2/3 cup serving. That's the same amount of sugar as an entire can of Coca-Cola.
Häagen‑Dazs' Dulce De Leche Churro flavor was right alongside it, carrying the same calorie count and sugar amount in a 2/3 cup serving.
“I bought this at Kroger because they got rid of all regular Dulce De Leche, my favorite flavor. So I thought I would try this one. Horrible choice," said one review.
Another Ben & Jerry's flavor was a shade behind at No. 3, as the Chocolate Fudge Brownie flavor contains 350 calories and 37 grams of sugar per serving.
More offerings from Ben & Jerry's and Häagen‑Dazs rounded out the top five, with Bourbon Praline coming from the latter and "Chubby Hubby" from the former.
The "Chubby Hubby" flavor contains vanilla malt ice cream, fudge-covered pretzels, and fudge and peanut butter swirls - undoubtedly the cause for the 470 calories and 35 grams of sugar per serving.
Two flavors from Blue Bell ended the list, but the rankings clarified that these specialty offerings from the brand were far higher than their more traditional flavors.
The strawberries and homemade vanilla flavor contains 31 grams of sugar, while the brand's "Java Jolt" coffee-flavored ice cream packs in 29 grams of sugar per serving.
"Java Jolt" only counts for 270 calories per serving, however, and fans of the brand note that it is often out of stock due to its popularity.
As Americans enjoy their favorite ice cream flavors, they now know which ones to enjoy even more sparingly if they're concerned about sugar intake.
