James Gunn Says Supergirl Will Be a Very 'Different’ Hero Than 'Superman' In New DC Era
David Corenswet’s well-rounded portrayal of the iconic Superman has been a hit with fans, resulting in explosive early box office numbers. The James Gunn-directed film was highly anticipated, and based on the early reviews from critics and fans alike, it hasn’t disappointed.
Many fans of the DC Universe have praised Corenswet as the perfect fit for the role, and moviegoers raved about the new Superman movie.
However, while Corenswet's Superman has been dubbed a man of the people who seems to have it together for the most part, that won't be the case for the next DC superhero.
WARNING: Spoilers for the new Superman movie are below.
During a recent interview with ScreenRant, Gunn gave a candid viewpoint on how the upcoming Supergirl character, Milly Alcock, will be portrayed. This came after Supergirl made a cameo appearance in the Superman film, showing up drunk at the Fortress of Solitude to retrieve her dog, Krypto.
"Yeah, that's her. She's a mess. She's a total mess," Gunn said. "I mean, I think as we learn, she's had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background."
"He's had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she's ended up different than her cousin."
As ScreenRant detailed, Supergirl will be based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, which aligns with her introduction and sets the stage for upcoming projects.
The comments are noteworthy from Gunn, who's essentially giving a fairly detailed look into what lies ahead for one of DC's next superheroes.
