‘We didn’t have coaches…’: Sunil Gavaskar compares Shubman Gill’s captaincy with the time he used to play for India
Former Indian cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar believes that Shubman Gill did not have his final say when announcing the playing XI for the matches in the ongoing India vs England Test series. Gavaskar believes that announcing the final team is a decision that only the captain should finalize, and it should not be affected by anyone else.
Sunil Gavaskar then recalled about the time he used to play for India and times were different. He mentioned how the team selection were entirely the captain’s duty and there was no concept of coach- only managers and assistant managers.
“We didn’t have coaches. We just had former players as managers or assistant managers of the team. They were the kind of people who you went up to and talked to, they gave you some advice at lunchtime or at the end of the day’s play or on the eve of the game. So, it is difficult for me to get my head around the captain and the coach’s combination,” Gavaskar said.
All this criticism and comparision was done by Sunil Gavaskar as Indian team have heavily relied on allrounders during their ongoing Test series against England. The team have been ignoring specialist spinner Kuldeep Yadav in all the four matches, and instead going with allrounders to support their pacers.
The ignoring of a specialist spinner and relying on allrounders to provide support to the pacers is what led to Sunil Gavaskar thinking that the head coach had his influence in deciding the final playing XI.
