Critics Roasted Over 'Happy Gilmore 2' Rotten Tomatoes Score
The reviews for Happy Gilmore 2 are in and there's one surprising thing to note when it comes to how critics viewed the film via Rotten Tomatoes as compared to the first.
As of Sunday morning, Happy Gilmore 2 has earned a 67% score on the website when it comes to critics' reviews, with 34 of the 51 on the website certifying the Adam Sandler flick as "fresh." The movie has fared better with audiences, though, with that score coming in at 73%.
However, the critics score is shocking when compared to the original film, Happy Gilmore, which registered a 63% mark (36 fresh to 21 rotten). Safe to say, that left some people stunned.
"How is Rotten Tomatoes critics score for Happy Gilmore 2 higher than the original?" Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy asked.
"What are we even doing here? Happy 2 was terrible but who cares. It’s the type of movie you can turn on, take a nap and miss nothing. Harmless nostalgia time killer."
Others who watched Happy Gilmore 2 agreed.
"This is actually insane and I think proof that most critics are bought by Netflix," one repost stated. "There is not a chance in hell this would be over 60% from critics if released in theaters. We need a new system."
"Finally, someone with a rational opinion who agrees with me," one person said of Portnoy's take.
"It's criminal," another person said. "First was 1,000% (better)."
Even if you liked Happy Gilmore 2, it's impossible to argue that the sequel was better than the original. It's always difficult for a sequel to be better than its predecessor and Happy Gilmore 2 didn't accomplish that feat.
While the critics score didn't get it right, the audience score did. Happy Gilmore earned an 85% score, which was 12% better than the sequel.
Happy Gilmore 2 is currently and only available on Netflix.
