Didarul Islam: Slain NYPD Officer Leaves Behind Pregnant Wife, 2 Kids
Didarul Islam was named as the New York police officer who was shot and killed by a gunman who entered a Park Avenue skyscraper in New York City on July 28.
"Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department. He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today," the NYPD wrote in a statement.
The slain officer leaves behind two kids and a wife who is eight months pregnant, reported the New York Post, which identified the officer through sources. He was then formally identified by police officials in a news conference.
The gunman, named by authorities as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, was dead at the scene of the mass shooting. The NYPD confirmed his death in a statement.

Tamura was armed with an AR-15-style rifle on July 28 when he walked into a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper and began firing, killing Islam, three other individuals, and critically wounding a fifth person, New York officials said during a press conference.
The mayor says Officer Didarul Islam was 'saving lives'
The slain officer, a Bangladeshi immigrant, was a three-and-a-half-year veteran of the police department and was working in the Park Avenue building in a private security role, New York Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference.
The building contained the headquarters of the NFL and a company called Blackstone.
“He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers,” Adams said of the murdered police officer. “He embodies what this city is all about. He’s a true blue New Yorker, not only in a uniform he wore.”
According to the Post, Islam "had been on the force since December 2021 and worked out of the 47th precinct in the Bronx."
New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Tamura has "documented mental health history," although his motive for the shooting is still unknown.
Tisch said Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, was licensed to carry a gun in Nevada.
There have been 50 police officers killed in the line of duty so far this year across the country, according to the Officer Down Memorial page.
Of those, 27 were killed by gunfire.
