Police officer among 4 victims killed in Midtown mass shooting: NYPD
MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) – An off-duty NYPD officer was among the four people who were shot and killed by a gunman inside a Manhattan skyscraper on Monday, according to the NYPD.
Police said Officer Didarul Islam was only 36 years old and a 3-and-a-half-year veteran of the force when 27-year-old Shane Tamura killed him inside 345 Park Ave. around 7 p.m.
Islam had been working private security detail when shots were fired, according to authorities. Police said he died while protecting others.
A crowd of fellow NYPD officers stood vigil as Islam’s remains were carried away from a local hospital. Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, leaves behind a wife, two young boys and was expecting a third child, according to authorities.
"Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department," the NYPD wrote on X. "We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain. We will forever honor his legacy."
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the three others who were killed in the shooting were two men and a woman, although he did not confirm their identities. An NFL employee was also injured in the shooting, Commissioner Roger Goodell said.
Tamura died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities. Police have not confirmed a motive in the mass shooting.
