UNHCR: Nearly 1.2 Million Afghans Returned From Pakistan in Nine Months
Nearly 1.2 million Afghans have returned from Pakistan since September 2023, UNHCR reports, warning many face dire conditions and urging urgent aid to prevent a worsening humanitarian crisis.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says nearly 1.2 million Afghan migrants have returned from Pakistan between September 15, 2023, and June 30, 2025.
According to its report released Thursday, more than 156,000 returnees, including 98,000 registered cardholders, have received humanitarian assistance since crossing back into Afghanistan.
UNHCR said women and girls make up about half of those receiving aid, while roughly 2.2 percent of all returnees are people with disabilities.
The agency added that over 315,000 Afghans returned in 2025 alone, including 51,000 who were forcibly deported by Pakistani authorities.
Mounting political and security pressures in Pakistan are threatening the status of more than two million Afghan refugees who have lived there for decades.
UNHCR warned that many returnees face bleak conditions, lacking proper housing, jobs, and access to essential services in an already fragile Afghanistan.
Aid agencies are urging both Afghan authorities and the global community to increase support, cautioning that without sustained help, the wave of returns could deepen Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis.
